Baron De Funes White Blend - Spain - $16.67
CHARDONNAY and MACEBEO BLEND From Cariñena is one of the oldest protected wine-growing regions in Europe. It has a continental climate with a large difference between day and night-time temperatures which gives the region’s wines a characteristic intensity. BARON DE FUNES White blend is an estate-bottled wine from the Denominacion de Origen (D.O) CARIÑENA, the home of the Grenache (or Garnacha) grape. D.O. Cariñena has the most “Old Vine” Garnacha in Spain. This white blend is the sister in the team of wine selections. BARON DE FUNES is a blend of Chardonnay 70% and Macebeo 30%, the Chardonnay lending strength and dryness to the Macebeo varietal. The BARON DE FUNES wine is made in the strictly delineated D.O. Cariñena in northeast Spain, a controlled appellation with many of the same requirements of the Rioja. D.O. Cariñena consists of over 25,000 acres of vineyards with 1,500 winegrowers since 1932. (Pronounced CAR-EEN-YENA) The vines are planted in poor soil and up to 70 years of age. The altitude above sea level is 1200 feet to 1800 feet depending on the vineyard. The high elevation of the vineyards results in more freshness of the grapes, more acidity. The vines are pruned severely with the overriding principle in mind that quality, not quantity, is preferred. The wine itself, in the words of the winemaker, Bright yellow straw color with an aromatic, zesty citrus and floral bouquet. Clean and crisp, with a notable freshness on the palate and refreshing apple and pear flavors... This wine is ideal with all sorts of tapas, antipasti, rice dishes and cheeses. Ideally pairs deliciouly with garlic prawns or calamari. |

Casas Del Bosque Pinot Noir 2015 - Chile - $23.49Casas del Bosque Pinot Noir Pequeñas Producciones 2015 Casablanca Valley Vineyard: All fruit was sourced from our own vineyard – located within the coolest, westernmost reaches of the Casablanca Valley. Sourced from a hillside block facing north-east, planted in 2006 on red clay soil derived from granite. Plant material is a massal selection, low in vigour and long established in Chile under the name of “Valdivieso clone.” Crop levels are an average of 3.5 tonnes per hectare (1.7 tons per acre). Harvest: After a dry and relatively warm growing season, harvest was carried out by hand in 12kg picking cases during the week of 20th April 2015. Vinification: Destemming (without crushing) and an individual berry selection before being gravity fed to a small open-top tank. A 5-day cold soak (at 5ºC/41ºF) ensued after which time the must was warmed and inoculated with selected yeasts and fermented during 6 days with temperatures peaking at 32ºC/90ºF. During fermentation the vats were hand-plunged twice daily in order to extract the ideal amount of tannin and colour. Following the completion of fermentation, the young wine was then drained to a mixture of new (35%) and second and third use (65%) French oak barrels for 18 months during which time it was racked twice: once in the spring (upon the completion of malolactic fermentation) and then once again shortly before bottling in October 2016. After bottling the finished wine was aged for at least three months in our cellar prior to release. Tasting Notes: Rather deep colour for a Pinot Noir. On the nose the oak is still rather prominent, but gradually notes of ripe red and black forest fruits appear. Medium bodied, with plush mouthfeel. The elegant tannins reappear on the finish. The wine will benefit from careful ageing, or decanting after opening. Preferably serve at 12 – 14ºC. Alcohol: 15.1% pH: 3.55 Total Acidity: 4.95 g/L Residual Sugar: 4.2 g/L Volatile Acidity: 0.72 g/L |
